Giving is one of the central themes in the Bible. John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that God gave the most valuable and precious gift possible, Jesus. The number one reason we give is not to support a church budget, but out of gratitude to God for Jesus and for all our blessings. First Things FirstIn Malachi 3:8-10 and in Proverbs 3:9-10 we learn about the principle of tithing and the idea that the first fruits of our labor/income belong to God. We find this principle all through God’s Word. Tithing, giving God the first 10% of our income to the local church, is a practical way we acknowledge that God is first in our lives. Jesus said that “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also,” (Matthew 6:21). God deserves our “first fruits,” not our “leftovers.”
